SUN RA: VISITOR FROM SATURN

A brother from another planet named Sun Ra who genuinely believed that he was a Saturnian was the principal inventor of contemporary cosmic music. Sun Ra, whose real name was Herman Blount, was anything but normal. He named himself after the Egyptian sun god in 1952. He dressed as if he had just touched down in a flying saucer and claimed that he was on an extraterrestrial mission to save humanity. His concerts were the ultimate theatrical spectacle for their time, filled with exotic dance, light shows, midgets, fire-eaters, and special chants.

Sun Ra spread the simple gospel that space is the place. “Outer space is a pleasant place, / A place where you can be free,” sang Sun Ra. “There’s no limit to the things you can do, / Your thought is free and your life is worthwhile, / Space is the place.” He predicted, “In tomorrow’s world, men will not need artificial instruments such as jets and spaceships. In the world of tomorrow, the new man will ‘think’ the place he wants to go, then his mind will take him there.” Sun Ra’s language may have been strictly 1950s, but his thinking was highly advanced.

Over the years, Sun Ra’s pioneering jazz group was variously billed as Sun Ra and His Arkestra, the Solar Myth Arkestra, Cosmo Jet Set Arkestra, Myth-Science Arkestra, Intergalactic Research Arkestra, and Astro-Intergalactic Infinity Arkestra. Sun Ra’s band members, some of whom had close encounters with UFOs, believed their leader really was from Saturn and that one day they would all be rescued from Earth by extraterrestrials. Saxophonist John Gilmore boasted about having “fans on Mars and Jupiter.”

Sun Ra claimed that he was “in contact with something that possibly no one in human form has been in contact with.” He thought that “it could possibly be the same thing that the ancient Egyptians called the Nameless One. They had a temple to the Nameless One. The ancient Egyptians had a civilization for five thousand years without a break. No other nation has ever had that. They also gave the world the alphabet and philosophy…. I’m sure it’s the same force”

Addressing the question of a UFO cover-up, Sun Ra said plainly, “Americans are not that immature to panic because there’s more beings in the universe besides them.”

Performer Gilmore noticed a strange light flying “sideways” in the sky while driving from San Francisco to Berkeley, California, on October 14, 1984, with fellow Sun Ra Arkestra members John and Peter Hinds and Tyrone Hill Hinds and Hill observed the strange light as well. Gilmore recalled another sighting he and fellow musician June Tyson had after playing a gig in Watts, California. The two had just exited the club when June said nonchalantly, “Look at that spaceship going across there.” John looked up and said, “Damned if it ain’t In broad daylight. It is zooming, you know.”
